Jojo Rabbit (2019), directed by Taika Waititi, was an instant hit when it was released, deftly juggling satire, earnestness, and drama to great effect. Many fans of the film were surprised to discover it was based on a novel, Caging Skies, by Christine Leunens, but we found out the hard way that the film is a shocking departure from this book, which is a twisted story of the toxic relationship between captor and captive, exploring themes of toxic masculinity and utter despair.
